What is nasda?

NASDA stands for North American Sport Dog Association. It’s a dog sport organization that focuses on natural hunting and working instincts, especially scenting and problem-solving, in a fun, accessible way for many breeds and mixed breeds.

What makes NASDA unique

  • All breeds welcome (including mixed breeds)

  • Emphasizes instinctual behaviors rather than strict obedience

  • Many events are designed to feel real-world and natural, not overly technical

  • Beginner-friendly but still challenging at advanced levels

Main NASDA Sports & Events

Here are the most common NASDA activities:

Trailing & Locating

  • Dogs follow a mixture called “rat tea” that contains the smell of rat urine and droppings to locate a hidden cage that contains the live rat.

  • Great for dogs that love tracking and problem-solving

Shed Dog

  • Dogs search for naturally shed antlers

  • Popular with sporting and hunting breeds, but open to all

  • In the first level dogs just need to locate the sheds, not retrieve them, for full points.

Lost Item / Urban Locating

  • Dogs locate a specific item with human scent

  • Mimics real-life scent challenges

  • Perfect for dogs who’ve done AKC Handler Discrimination, but open to all dogs.

Urban Locating

  • Dogs search for rat(s) hidden either indoors or out. Setup mimic real life urban rat hunts while utilizing a dog’s natural instinct to search.

  • Focus on scent, independence, and drive (rats are always safely contained)

Levels & Titles

  • Events are offered at multiple levels, from beginner friendly to more challenging as your dog advances.

  • Dogs can earn titles as they progress

  • Handlers are allowed to encourage and support their dogs

Why people love NASDA

  • Low pressure, supportive trial environment

  • Excellent for high-energy dogs, shy dogs, and dogs that need a job

  • Strengthens the dog–handler bond

  • Mentally and physically engaging
