Experience

Growing up, Sarah’s Mom was a professional dog groomer and ran a successful business in Fortuna, California called Jessi’s Dog Grooming. Sarah began observing dogs there, helping out in the shop and studying dog behavior even as a small child. From there, Sarah and Jessie began taking classes at Humboldt Dog Obedience (HumDog) in 1988. Together, they began competing and titling their dogs in AKC Obedience. Sarah trained her Boxer, Tyson, through AKC Utility but stopped competing in obedience after his CD to focus solely on conformation and Junior Showmanship. Sarah showed in “Juniors” from age 10-17 and learned about sportsmanship, building a reloationship with the dog and that competition is not about being better than other teams, it’s about bettering y0urself.

As an adult, Sarah began training agility but eventually found her passion in the sport of schutzhund. She studies schutzhund for two years before finally finding a club and began training in 2012, competing with her German Shepherd “Commandant vom Stiendbeckland” (Monte) earning his BH and then his IPO1 before he was retired due to a spinal injury. Since then, Sarah has helped start a local club and is the current President.

Sarah and Monte continued to achieve trick titles through AKC and Do More With Your Dog, as well as the highest level of the CGC titles and competing and titling in both AKC Scent work as well as National Association of Canine Scent Work. Monte was also trained by Sarah as a Service Dog to performing nurmerous complicated tasks until he eventually retired after being attacked by a leashed dog in public while in performance of his service work. Since then, Sarah has not had another service dog but has worked with Disability Rights California and Eureka Police Department to host a workshop on the rights of service dog handlers as well as rights of business owners. Before Monte’s IPO titles, Sarah and Monte also trained with the local CARDA Search and Rescue group, until deciding schutzhund and SAR kept her from her young family too much, so it needed to be one or the other. She chose the sport instead but still admires and appreciates the sacrifice and commitment of our SAR team and all they do.

These experiences of working with dogs in both the real world and demanding sport worlds has given Sarah a unique perspective. Whether you’re looking for precision heeling, scent detection, working with a reactive dog or just trying to get better manners, My Nosey K9 has your covered!

Train with us today for better behavior tomorrow

Sarah Lindgren-Akana and Monte

Sarah was the Anne Sullivan teacher for my dog, who I inadvertently raised like the untame child, Helen Keller. Sarah quickly knows, loves, and recognizes the gifts of your dog, using the Karen Pyror method of reinforcing the behaviour you want, which brings those gifts and more to fruition. Our lives, two and four footed, are richer, happier because of Sarah’s work.
— Karen G. Trinidad, CA
Sarah gave Cider such a strong foundation in scent work, three years later, Cider is excelling in the upper levels! Sarah makes classes and learning fun and Cider’s work ethic and enthusiasm has translated into other performance sports and conformation. Her continued support to past and present clients is to be commended and is appreciated.

Super knowledgeable about the needs and services. I highly recommend her to everyone...

My dogs and I absolutely love My Nosey K9! There are very few people that I trust with my dogs and Sarah is one of them. I’ve been involved with dogs for the last fifteen years and have trained my dogs for conformation and obedience, and have never found a trainer in Humboldt County that I recommended as highly.

She’s very articulate and knowledgeable and helps me be a better handler. Her training is focused on building trust between the dog and the owner. Five Stars all the way.
— Celeste V. Eureka, CA
Sarah is such a thoughtful, smart trainer who uses her experience, research and evidence-based methodologies to train. She is a refreshingly professional dog trainer for our area and we’re fortunate to have her here!

This is an incredibly insightful woman. I am grateful for her experience with dogs and especially GSD’s. I felt I knew a lot, but this IS her passion.

Creating confidence and focus through positive reinforcement

These videos demonstrate some of the ways My Nosey K9 helps people train for a calmer, more polite dog as well as make confident competitors. Whether through private lessons, boarding or classes, train with us today, for better behavior tomorrow.

During Wheezie’s Behavior Mod Board and Train stay, we worked on a number of problem behaviors. One was learning to calmly give up her toy. Staying in a calmer state, she’s able to not lunge for the toy when I reach for it, and she also doesn’t bark to initiate the game. This was one step in the process of teaching not to bark to get someone to throw a ball for her.

Great example of my Puppy Jump Start board and train program. Leash manners, confidence, socialization and more are covered in this four week program.

In this Advanced Scent Detection Class, Mink does an interior search. After she locates the odor under the table, she gives her owner an alert where her owner promptly clicks and treats.

Keeper learns he can control whether or not the stuffed dog is allowed to get closer to him by “saying yes” with a chin rest on the upside down bowl, and not allowing the dog to approach by taking his head off the bowl. He gets a treat from the auto feeder for either response.

Keeper problem solves finding an elevated hide on a vehicle that is inaccessible. The struggle for him is trying to decide where he is closest to the source of the odor before giving his alert. In the end, he did extremely well and was right under the hidden odor.
